Afternoon tea at LondonHouse and an Evanston cafe By Joanne Trestrail

Every now and then, meeting with a client over formal afternoon tea service instead of lunch makes a nice change. Two new places come at the idea from distinctly different perspectives: One clicks; the other doesn't.

Cafe Coralie, which opened in February, is a fine option for people who live or work in Evanston. Its decor is as sweet as its desserts, with tufted banquettes, bentwood chairs and assorted cafe tables, some of which have Eiffel Tower bases.

A sibling of downtown Evanston's Patisserie Coralie, the cafe serves the same artfully rendered French pastries and offers the same tea service (noon to 4 p.m. daily; reserve 24 hours in advance) in a space that's larger and cushier than the original. The fixed menu ($25 per person) includes a pot of tea (14 kinds to consider) and a three-tiered tower of tasty, crustless finger sandwiches, macarons, madeleines, tiny eclairs, petit fours and more. Buttery molded canele cakes will restore your faith in humanity, or at least in people passionate about pastry.

Everything we ate was perfectly fresh and served with tuned-in efficiency by personable young staffers. The presentation is simple and execution is spot-on.

Patisserie Coralie & Cafe Coralie Afternoon tea is not merely an English affair – French bakeries like Patisserie Coralie and Café Coralie in Evanston – both designed by Pascal Berthoumieux – are serving up their own spin. Guests can indulge in carefully crafted French pastries such as macarons and madeleines, in addition to traditional finger sandwiches in chic French digs. Both locations offer a selection of teas from local purveyor Benjamin Tea Inc. The afternoon tea service is offered by reservation 24 hours in advance Monday though Friday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., and costs $22 per person. Bon appétit!

New Cafe Coralie location opens on Howard Street By Samantha Handler, Assistant City Editor

The second Evanston Patisserie Coralie location, Cafe Coralie, opened Feb. 9 on Howard Street, taking the place of a former Evanston Police outpost.

The cafe — located at 633 Howard St. — is an extension of the first, director of operations Fiona Lazar said. The larger space allowed them to add more couches and create a “more luxurious feel.” She said other than size, the cafe has the same interior aesthetic and menu as the patisserie. Both locations offer traditional French pastries, the “largest selection” of macarons in the Chicago area as well as quiches and sandwiches, according to their website.

The cafe also has a larger kitchen than the other location, allowing owner Pascal Berthoumieux to form a new business model, said economic development manager Paul Zalmezak. Lazar said the added kitchen space makes it easier for the business to sell large quantities of macarons to hotels downtown, country clubs and other cafes in the area.

“Our kitchen in Patisserie Coralie just didn’t provide space to do anything like that so this is an opportunity to expand,” Lazar said.

Berthoumieux formerly owned a business now called Z Breakfast Club, located at 1512 Sherman Ave., and owned Bistro Bordeaux, a restaurant that closed last spring after seven years in business. At the time of the closing, Berthoumieux said he hoped to open a new...
